Let’s be honest. One of the best parts of living in San Diego is the close proximity to all of the amazing beaches, and coastline along with stunning daily sunrises and sunsets.
Most of my off time (during summer especially) is spent at the beach with my family and I love that it’s a place that everyone looks forward to going to. Not only do I enjoy going with my family but I love seeing other kids and families there having an awesome time.
I have a system now for packing everyone up with multiple designated bags: My stuff, kids clothes and diapers, a cooler bag with snacks and drinks, and a bag of beach toys (shovels are a must.) We are now a well oiled beach machine ready to take on the day!
I want to give you my 3 favorite beaches here in La Jolla. The one I spend the most time at is La Jolla Shores because it is so safe for kids 🙂

Horseshoe: Also known as Whispering Sands Beach, Horseshoe is located at the north end of Marine Street Beach in La Jolla. It’s one of the more private beaches that only locals know about so this beach makes for a perfect getaway! The rocks at Horseshoe Beach have unique shapes, cracks, coves, and even some amazing tidepools which makes visiting here feel like an adventure. You are able to surf and scuba dive or just tan and walk around in the tide pools here. Dogs are more than welcome too.
La Jolla Cove Beach: This is a great tourist destination in La Jolla. This beach is protected by a rocky point which blocks waves rolling in from the west most of the time and creates a safe swimming beach. They also have benches, picnic tables and a nice grass park so you can plan a whole day here if you wanted! Conveniently, there is free parking too but this beach is very popular on sunny days and because of its size you probably won’t get a spot unless you are here early!
La Jolla Shores: This beach is the biggest and most popular beach in La Jolla. It’s wide and long, giving people more than enough room for activities such as picnics, volleyball games and bonfires. Rentals are also available at the beach and on Avenida de la Playa where you’ll find a market and a few amazing restaurants. The beach is in front of Kellogg Park which has two grassy areas where you can people watch and admire the beauty of this beach. The south of this beach, you can find kayakers and paddle boarders scoping out the La Jolla caves. About a mile north up the beach, is Scripps Pier. Even though the beach is large and so is the parking lot, they both can fill up on sunny days. Get here early and make a full day of your visit!
Pro tip: Bring cash or Venmo to buy snacks and treats from the vendors on the beach. We often get ice creams for everyone 🙂
The beach is for everyone. You can bring your friends or family or just go solo, but either way, you’re guaranteed to have a good time at these amazing beaches!
